How to Choose the Perfect Outfits for Senior Pictures

One of the most common questions I hear from seniors is:

"What should I wear?"

The good news is that there isn't one perfect answer.

The best senior portraits happen when your clothing reflects your personality while helping you feel comfortable and confident.
Here are some of my favorite tips for choosing outfits that photograph beautifully.

Start with What Makes You Feel Amazing

If you constantly tug at an outfit, feel uncomfortable, or don't feel like yourself, it will show in your photos.

Choose clothing that:
  • Fits well
  • Feels comfortable
  • Reflects your personality
  • Makes you feel confident

Confidence is always the most attractive thing you can wear.

Bring Variety

I typically recommend multiple looks during a session.

Consider bringing:
  • A casual outfit
  • A dressy outfit
  • Something related to your hobby or sport
  • A statement piece that shows your personality

This variety creates a gallery that feels dynamic and complete.

Think About Timelessness

Trendy pieces can be fun, but remember these photographs may be hanging on your family's walls for decades.

Try mixing trendy items with classic pieces that won't look dated five years from now.

Coordinate Colors Carefully

Some colors photograph beautifully.

Rich tones such as:
  • Navy
  • Emerald
  • Burgundy
  • Cream
  • Black
  • Soft earth tones

often work wonderfully.

Avoid clothing with large logos, distracting graphics, or busy patterns that compete for attention.

Don't Forget Accessories

Accessories help complete a look.

Consider:
  • Hats
  • Boots
  • Jewelry
  • Jackets
  • Scarves
  • Letter jackets

These small details can add personality and variety.

Bring More Than You Think You'll Need

I always tell seniors that it's better to have options.

Bring several outfits to your consultation and session. Together, we can determine what works best with your chosen locations and overall vision.

Consider Professional Hair and Makeup

Professional hair and makeup can elevate your entire experience.

The goal isn't to look different.

The goal is to look like the very best version of yourself.

Dress for Your Story

The perfect outfit isn't necessarily the most expensive one.

It's the one that helps tell your story.

Whether that's cowboy boots, a prom dress, athletic gear, a leather jacket, or your favorite pair of jeans, your clothing should help showcase who you are.

Need Help Planning Your Wardrobe?

At Studio 21, every senior session begins with a complimentary consultation where we discuss outfits, locations, and your vision.
