How to Feel Less Awkward During Your Senior Photo Session

5/1/2025

Have you never been in front of a professional camera before? Feeling a little awkward just thinking about your senior photo session? First of all--relax. You’re not alone, and it’s totally normal to feel a few butterflies. The good news is, there are plenty of ways to shake those nerves and step into your session feeling like a pro.
When you’re relaxed, your photos look more natural, and you’ll actually enjoy the experience! Win-win, right?

Tips to Keep It Cool and Confident
  • Pick the Right Photographer
Your photographer sets the tone for your whole experience. Choose someone whose style you love and who feels easy to talk to. A photographer like me (wink wink) will make sure you feel comfortable and confident from the moment we start. When you vibe with your photographer, the rest is smooth sailing.

  • Work Those Eyes
If you’re worried your smile might look forced, start by focusing on your eyes. Yep, your eyes can totally express emotion on their own! Try practicing in the mirror before your session—get familiar with how your face looks when you smile naturally. Pro tip: engage the muscles around your eyes when you smile—it’s the secret sauce to a genuine look.

  • Get Pumped
Make the day of your session a mini celebration! Blast your favorite tunes, have an epic breakfast, and maybe even throw a little dance party. This is a milestone worth getting excited about. If you’re still feeling jittery, bring along a friend to hype you up (just don’t let them steal the spotlight).

  • Breathe It Out
Nervous energy tends to make us stiff, and that shows in photos. Take a few deep, belly-filling breaths before and during your session. As you exhale, smile—you’ll feel your face and body relax instantly.

  • Keep It Moving
Feeling awkward standing still? Don’t! Movement is your friend. Shift your weight, change up your pose, or turn your head slightly. These small actions not only ease nerves but also add a natural vibe to your photos. Your photographer will guide you through this, so don’t hesitate to say if you’re feeling stiff.

  • Feel Good, Look Great
Confidence is the key to amazing photos. Professional hair and makeup can help you feel your best, but so can wearing something you absolutely love. Avoid trying out a new outfit for the first time—it’s better to stick with something that already makes you feel like a rockstar.

With these simple tips, your senior photo session will feel like a breeze—and your photos will show it. Natural, confident, and so you.
