Put Your Best Face Forward

Elevated. Intentional. Unforgettable.

13 years.

13 Years.
Melissa M. HardenHEADSHOT PROFESSIONAL I make people look good.

May 13, 2013 → May 13, 2026
There are moments in business where you realize you didn’t just build a company…
You built a life.
Thirteen years ago, I started this journey with a borrowed camera, determination, and a dream bigger than my resources at the time. Back then, I was painting my own backdrops by hand and photographing residents in nursing homes to practice my portrait and headshot work.
And my “studio”?
It was my 900-square-foot basement… which I lovingly referred to as the “lower level” to class it up a bit.
I didn’t have a glamorous studio. I didn’t have a massive following.
What I did have was passion and a deep love for people.
I practiced relentlessly. I learned through trial and error. I said yes to opportunities. I showed up over and over again.
In 2013, what started as a photobooth business slowly evolved into something so much bigger than I ever imagined.
Over the years, Studio 21 became more than a photography business. It became:

  • a creative space
  • a storytelling space
  • a community space
  • a place where people could feel seen, celebrated, empowered, and remembered

I’ve photographed seniors before graduation, professionals building brands, families preserving legacies, businesses growing their presence, and moments people never want to forget.
Along the way, I’ve been blessed with incredible clients, lifelong friendships, community support, published work, speaking opportunities, mentoring opportunities, and recognition I never could have imagined when I first started.
But the truth is…
The most meaningful part has never been the awards or recognition.
It’s been the people.
The conversations. The trust. The stories. The moments when someone leaves my studio standing a little taller than when they walked in.
That’s what has kept me going for 13 years.
And now, sitting inside this downtown studio I once only dreamed about… it feels surreal.
Every inch of Studio 21 tells part of the story:

  • the murals
  • the vintage pieces
  • the lighting
  • the artwork
  • the creativity
  • the imperfections
  • the growth

All of it represents a girl who simply refused to quit.
To every single client, supporter, mentor, friend, organization, student, and family member who has supported me over these last 13 years…
Thank you.
You helped me build this dream.
And honestly?
I feel like I’m just getting started.
With gratitude, Melissa M. Harden Studio 21

Hate Your Headshots? Let’s Fix That!

PictureJerry Winters of Arthur, IL
We’ve all been there: you snap a selfie or get a headshot taken, and the results make you cringe instead of smile. If you’ve ever been too embarrassed to share your headshots, you’re not alone. The good news? You don’t have to settle for photos that don’t feel like you.

Here’s why headshots sometimes go sideways and why it’s totally worth giving them another shot.

1. The Angle is Awful We all know the struggle of finding the “magic angle” with a cellphone. Or worse, the photographer was in a rush, and the photos ended up feeling as flat as a pancake. Sure, mini sessions are quick and budget-friendly, but if the photographer isn’t on their A-game, the results can leave you less than thrilled.

2. It’s All About Connection A great headshot starts with understanding the person in front of the camera. If the photographer didn’t take the time to get to know you or ask about your needs, it’s no wonder the photos feel off. Your headshot should reflect you your personality, professionalism, and unique vibe.

3. Lack of Guidance Not everyone is a pro at posing and that’s okay! But if the photographer didn’t explain how to stand, what to do with your hands, or how to relax, the session probably felt awkward. And awkward feelings often lead to awkward photos.

Ready for a Do-Over? If you’re ready to ditch those cringe-worthy selfies or upgrade your headshots, I’ve got you covered. At Studio 21, we make the process fun, relaxed, and all about YOU. You’ll leave with photos that you’re proud to share, whether it’s for LinkedIn, your website, or just because.

Clean It Up: The Details That Elevate Your Headshot

4/26/2026

PictureWe let AI handle this one because your first impression shouldn’t include nose hair.

Let’s have a quick, honest conversation because this is where great headshots separate from average ones.
Grooming matters.
I’m talking about the small details that the camera will absolutely notice:
  • Nose hair
  • Ear hair
  • Beard lines
  • Necklines
  • Eyebrows
Now… unless that’s part of your personal brand (hey, no judgment—just know it’s a very specific look 😉), a little cleanup goes a long way.

Why This Matters More Than You Think
Your headshot is a close-up. It’s designed to highlight you your expression, your confidence, your presence.
But if something is distracting like stray hairs or an unshaped beard it pulls attention away from everything you want people to focus on.
Instead of:
“Wow, he looks confident and professional.”
You risk:
“Something looks… off.”
And we don’t want “off.” We want intentional.

For the Guys, Here’s the Move
  • Trim nose and ear hair (quick, easy, game changer)
  • Shape your beard or go for a clean shave
  • Clean up your neckline and cheek lines
  • Lightly tidy your eyebrows (nothing drastic just clean and natural)
You don’t need a full transformation just a polished version of you.

Want It Done Right?
If you’d rather not guess your way through it, I’ve got you covered.
You can book with Alyssa here:

or go directly to her booking site:

She understands the Studio 21 look and will get you camera-ready without overdoing it.

Because the Camera Sees Everything
The goal isn’t perfection it’s intention.
When you walk into your session looking clean, polished, and put together, it shows. And more importantly… you feel it.
And that confidence?
That’s what truly makes the image.

How to Make Your Bio Work Harder for You

4/26/2026

  1. Start Strong, Stay Strong
The opening of your bio is where you hook them. Establish credibility early by mentioning who you are and what you bring to the table. Then, sprinkle in one or two of your biggest achievements—it’s like a highlight reel of your awesomeness. Bonus points for including your goals; it shows ambition and gives readers a glimpse of where you’re headed.
  2. Keep It Concise
While you want to provide meaningful details, no one has time for a novel. Aim for 300–500 words—enough to showcase your value while leaving them intrigued. Think of your bio as a teaser trailer, not the full-length film.
  3. Match Your Vibe
Your headshots and your bio should be a match made in branding heaven. Got a fun, approachable headshot? Make sure your tone reflects that, while staying professional. If your headshot exudes confidence and sophistication, let your words do the same. Consistency is key to creating a memorable and trustworthy impression.

Already nailed your bio? Fantastic! Now let’s make sure your headshots say the same thing. Reply to this blog or schedule a consultation to create headshots that align perfectly with the message you’re putting out into the world.
Let’s make that first impression unforgettable. 217-962-0048
