The Story of Studio 21
Every business has a beginning. Studio 21 began with a vision, not simply to create a photography studio, but to create an experience. I wanted a place where every person who walked through the doors would feel welcomed, comfortable, inspired, and valued. A place where portraits became memories, where creativity could flourish, and where every detail mattered. When I first walked into 1408 Broadway Avenue, I could already see what others couldn't. Beneath the unfinished walls and empty spaces was the studio I had imagined for years. The renovation became a true labor of love. My son, Skylor, and I spent countless hours searching antique stores, estate sales, and specialty shops looking for pieces that had character and history. Every chair, light fixture, mirror, cabinet, and decorative detail was carefully chosen to help create the timeless atmosphere Studio 21 is known for today. Together we considered everything from paint colors and lighting to traffic flow and client comfort. Every decision was made with one question in mind: "How can we make this an unforgettable experience for our clients?" My son, Chance, also jumped in throughout the process, helping wherever he was needed as the studio slowly transformed from construction site to welcoming creative space. None of this would have been possible without the incredible support of Jasper Holdings. Throughout the build-out they were accommodating, professional, and wonderful to work with. They truly believed in the vision and helped make it possible. I am equally grateful to my landlord, Keith Summers, whose generosity, encouragement, and commitment to downtown Mattoon have helped make Studio 21 feel like home. And speaking of home... The 1400 block of Broadway Avenue has always been my favorite block in downtown Mattoon. Long before Studio 21 existed, I loved its character, architecture, and sense of community. Having the opportunity to build my business here feels like everything came full circle. Today, Studio 21 has grown into much more than a photography studio. Inside you'll find a welcoming reception area, professional photography bays, a vintage-inspired Green Room used for consultations and portrait sessions, a salon and barber space, dressing room with shower, fully equipped kitchen, laundry room, handicap-accessible restroom, comfortable client amenities, complimentary beverages and snacks, and thoughtfully designed spaces that allow clients to relax before and after their sessions. One of the studio's most recognizable features is the incredible artwork created by local artist Peyton Morrow. His custom murals beautifully unite photography and barbering into one cohesive work of art and have become a signature part of Studio 21's personality. Throughout the studio you'll also discover additional artwork generously on loan from Jerry Winter's Art Gallery in Arthur, IL, adding even more creativity and inspiration to the environment. Every wall, every room, every piece of furniture has a purpose. Studio 21 wasn't designed simply to look beautiful, it was designed to make people feel something. Studio 21 has never simply been about photography, hair, or beautiful spaces. It's about creating experiences people remember long after they leave. The walls may be finished, but the story is still being written, and we can't wait to see who becomes part of the next chapter. Welcome to Studio 21. I'm so glad you're here. The Story Continues...While Studio 21 was thoughtfully designed as a luxury photography studio, it was always envisioned as something more, a place where talented professionals could work together under one roof to create an exceptional client experience. Today, Studio 21 is home to a beautiful vintage-inspired barber shop and salon, blending timeless style with modern comfort. Guests can enjoy professional photography and salon services in the same welcoming space, making every visit feel special.
